Notes from James

WEEKLY LETTER
ISSUE #26 · Oct 11

Hey {{first_name}}

Today I learned about why space is dark. A surprisingly deep topic.

Not only did I make my typical learning style video about this topic, but I also filmed a behind the scenes for YouTube.

If you’re interested in seeing either video, click the link below.

This topic is interesting for 2 reasons.

The first is that the sun is what lights up the Earth. The sun is the reason we don’t live in darkness, right?

So how come when you get closer to the sun (in space) everything is dark?

This is because we cannot see the light that comes from the sun until it reaches the Earth’s atmosphere.

Without our atmosphere, our planet would be completely dark (just like around the moon).

The second part of this phenomena that is interesting are the 200 billion trillion stars in the universe.

Many of these stars are as bright or brighter than the sun. Take a second to comprehend that.

And yet, space is still dark.

Scientists currently belief that this is due to the fact of uncomprehensively large distances. Like billions of light years.

The stars are so far away from Earth that their light has not reached our perception yet.

Scientists expect that in billions or trillions of years, the entire sky will be lit up because the light from the stars will have reached Earth.

Behind the Scenes of Making a Daily Learning Video
I finally filmed the behind the scenes of what it looks like for me to film my daily learning video. In this video I talk about choosing my topic, doing research, filming, and producing the video.

If you want to know how I make my daily learning videos, this is the one for you:

From James
This past week I settled into Playa del Carmen.

There are few things better than waking up early and watching the sun rise over the ocean.

The highlight of my day, which is funny because it is over by 7 AM hahaha

My other favorite parts of being here are the food (obviously), the walkability, the beach, and trying to speak Spanish.

I have been learning Spanish on Duolingo for over 630 days in a row (some days more than others).

With Duolingo you barely actually speak the language.

In my opinion, it is much better for teaching you how to read and write Spanish, not to listen and speak Spanish.

This is very counterintuitive for when you arrive in a Spanish speaking country and are only expected to speak and listen.

Regardless, I have improved my Spanish immensely in a short period of time and for that I am thankful.

See you next week!
