WEEKLY LETTER
ISSUE #28 · Oct 25

Hey {{first_name}}

I believe attachment is the root of all disappointment.

If you are not attached to an outcome of any given event then you cannot be disappointed.

Let me explain with 2 examples of the same scenario.

You really want a girlfriend, you’ve been single for a long time, and you have a date on Friday night.

You are attached to the outcome of that date, you really want this girl to become your girlfriend even though you have never met her before.

When the date doesn’t go well on Friday, and the girl tells you she’s not interested, it really disappoints you.

Here’s the second version:

You have a date on Friday night and you’re excited to try this new restaurant and see where things go.

The girl tells you that she is not interested in going on any more dates in the future, but this time you’re not disappointed, if anything, you were just happy to try that new restaurant.

What changed?

You weren’t attached to the outcome of the date.

You were there for the experience, not the outcome.

A lot of the time attachments intersect with expectations.

Another way to decrease your amount of overall disappointment is to have your expectations match your perception of reality.

Lower expectations or a more positive perception of reality will both decrease your amount of disappointment.

From James
This past week I left Mexico and made it back to the US.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Mexico.

Highlights included the food, the weather, practicing speaking another language, and the kind people.

Now I am in North Carolina for the weekend at a workshop.

I am extremely tired after a few very early mornings in a row as I traveled.

Sorry for the short newsletter this week, this was all I could come up with.

I’m looking forward to flying to Hawaii tomorrow :)

See you next week!
